Each month many books are published, and here are some of my favorite and most anticipated books coming out in July.
Little Puppy and the Big Green Monster by Mike Wohnoutka. 9780823430642. Gr PK-1.
Big Green Monster just wants a little bit of alone time, but perky Little Puppy wants to play. Mike Wohnoutka has illustrated some great books, but this is the first one that he has written and illustrated. Nice!
Little Green Peas : A Big Book of Colors by Keith Baker. 9781442476608. Gr PK-1.
Keith Baker’s peas have presented the alphabet (LMNO Peas) and counting (1-2-3 Peas), and now they are on to colors. Each color receives a two-page spread for the playful peas to romp through. Keith Baker has long been a favorite of my boys and me (they loved Hide and Snake), and his peas’ books are especially charming.
The Diamond Mystery (Whodunit Detective Agency, Book 1) by Martin Widmark. 9780448480671. Gr 2-4.
Who could be stealing the diamonds from Mr. Carat, the jeweler? When the police have no luck, Mr. Carat calls in Jerry and Maya, classmates who have just started their own detective agency.
Oliver and the Seawigs by Philip Reeve (illus. by Sarah McIntyre). 9780385387910. Gr 2-5.
Oliver’s parents love to explore. They took Oliver with them until finally there is nothing more to explore. Oliver is glad to have a home, but when his parents go missing, he sets of to rescue them—with the help of a myopic mermaid, an albatross, and a living island.
The Time of the Fireflies by Kimberley Griffiths Little. 9780545165631. Gr 4-6.
A doll with possessed by an evil spirit has been a curse for several generations of Larissa’s family. When Larissa receives a supernatural message to “Trust the fireflies,” she walks through them—and they take her back in time. As she meets her ancestors, she tries to piece together the mystery of the doll and why so many members of her past family have died early—and who might be next.
Skies Like These by Tess Hilmo. 9781250062819. Gr 4-7.
Sent to visit her aunt in Wyoming for the summer, Jade meets Joshua, who calls himself Roy and thinks he is related to Butch Cassidy. Roy’s dad used to own a hardware store in their small town, until a big chain store moved in. Now Roy wants Jade to be his Sundance Kid and help him get revenge on the store’s owners.
The Graveyard Book Graphic Novel : 1 by Neil Gaiman (art by P. Craig Russell). 9780062194817. Gr 4-7.
P. Craig Russell’s graphic novel adaptation of the 2009 Newbery medal winner is well done. This volume is the first of two, with the second volume scheduled to be published on September 30. 2014.
A Horse Called Hero by Sam Angus. 9781250045089. Gr 5-8.
Wolfie and his sister are sent out of London at the start of WWII. Wolfie finds an orphaned foal, names him Hero, and raises him, and the friendship between the two is great. Then Hero is stolen, and the boy is devastated. Wolfie finds Hero, who is now working in the horrible conditions of the mines—and he needs to find a way to save his friend.
Shipwreck Island (Book 1) by S.A. Bodeen. 9781250027771. Gr 5-8.
Six years after Sarah’s mother dies, her father remarries. Miserable, she makes life miserable for her dad, her stepmom, and her two stepbrothers. Her parents decide they will all go on a vacation on a yacht so everyone can get to know each other. A terrible storm shipwrecks them on a island that turns out to be inhabited by strange creatures.
Sniffer Dogs : How Dogs (and Their Noses) Save the World by Nancy Castaldo. 9780544088931. Gr 5-8.
Dogs’ noses are amazing, and this nonfiction book describes the jobs that dogs do using their incredible sense of smell.
Welcome to the Dark House (Dark House, Book 1) by Laurie Stolarz. 9781423181729. Gr 6-9.
What is your worst nightmare? Seven teen essay contestants won an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the newest project by famous film direct Justin Blake. But things start to get weird—and then one of them goes missing and their worst nightmares start coming true. This creepy chiller is told from the point of view of the other six teens.
Illusive (Book 1) by Emily Lloyd-Jones. 9780316254564. Gr 7-12.
While the deadly MK virus spread throughout the world, a vaccine was developed and passed out—without enough testing. Some people developed extraordinary abilities, such as telepathy, perfect memory, and heightened senses. Several teens team to find the vaccine, which was supposedly destroyed, before others can.
Family Romanov : Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia by Candace Fleming. 9780375967825. Gr 9-12.
Candace Fleming contrasts the life of the family of tsar Nicholas II of Russia with the horrible circumstances of the Russian peasantry, explaining what led up to the violent uprisings and the murder of the entire Romanov family. This excellent work of narrative nonfiction reads almost like a novel.
The Queen of the Tearling (Book 1) by Erika Johansen. 9780062328090. Gr 9-12.
Princess Kelsea has been raised in exile, and now, on her 19th birthday, she must travel to the castle and claim her throne. But she will face many dangers on the way, and some will use whatever they can to prevent her from doing so. In addition to the protection of her guards, she has around her neck the magical Tearling sapphire. But inexperienced as she is, the Tearling might not be enough to help her defeat the powerful evil magic of the Red Queen.
Wild by Alex Mallory. 9780062218742. Gr 9-12.
Raised alone in the wilderness and thinking he is the only one left alive after mystery disease swept the world, Cade meets up with a young couple. When they get in trouble, he helps them and ends up in a society he cannot understand. This is a modern retelling of Tarzan.
Four : A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth. 9780062345219. Gr 9-12.
This addition to the Divergent series gives more insight into the background and thoughts of Four.
Sinner (Wolves of Mercy Falls, Book 4) by Maggie Stiefvater. 9780545654579. Gr 9-12.
In this unexpected addition to the Wolves of Mercy Falls series, Cole follows Isabel to California.
